I was on vacation over the weekend, we went to Disney. Had a blast at Animal Kingdom - but I am glad to be home. With the preparation for our adventure, I did not get quite as many books read as I normally do - but here they are:
The Merging by John P Logsdon & Christopher P Young
5 Stars *****
A set of naughty ubernaturals, a demon-powered mage, and a wealthy amalgamite playboy who is far more than he seems.
Ian Dex is a genetically engineered cop, a bad ass with a
gun, and he has a reputation for being quite the horndog. He's also the current
chief of the Las Vegas Paranormal Police Department (PPD). His job is to
monitor all supernaturals and their involvement in the world of normals.
A new breed of supernaturals has turned up on the Vegas
Strip, and they're a lot tougher than your run-of-the-mill vampires and
werewolves. These are larger, meaner, and stronger...and they laugh at wood and
silver bullets. To make matters worse, the mage who created them is bent on
world domination and he's got the chops to back it up. He's confident, deadly,
loves inflicting pain, and has a tendency of walking around with his shirt open
because he looks like a Chippendale's model. Plus, he's using demons to give
him an inexhaustible supply of power.
With this new threat terrorizing the town, the PPD must
battle werewolves, vampires, fae, demons, and a succubus while trying to stop
Vegas from getting flipped on its head. It'll take every PPD officer to the
brink of their abilities to even have a shot at stopping the mage and his
nefarious plans.
The sad reality is that this dude may be beyond their
capabilities.
On top of that, the mage wants to join forces with Ian,
believing they'll make the perfect team to lay waste to the masses. He offers
Ian more power than he can ever imagine, a seat at the main table when the
world is at their feet, and a 7-foot tall succubus who has diamond-like eyes,
long flowing hair, glistening skin, and glutes so tight that Ian imagined she
could crush a walnut between them.
Tempting indeed.
Ian only has to do one thing to prove his loyalty: kill his
crew.
Locker Nine by Franklin Horton - 4 Stars ****
A terror attack, a prepper's daughter, and a psychopath
obsessed with video games.
Grace's dad taught her survival, self-defense, and shooting,
then sent her away to college hoping she'd never need those skills. All he
wanted to give her a fighting chance. When society collapsed, she fought.
Grace Hardwick’s dad is a science fiction writer who makes
his living destroying the world. When Grace decides to go away for her first
year of college her dad, Robert, can’t help but think of all of the potential
ways that society could collapse and strand his daughter hundreds of miles from
home. Then, near the end of her freshman year, it happens. Like a scene from
one of Robert’s books, coordinated terror attacks take place at dozens of
locations around the country – including on the campus of Grace’s university.
Grace and her father barely have time for a single rushed
phone call before they lose signal. In that call, Robert reminds his daughter
of the key he gave her when she left for school – the key that she constantly
wears around her neck. She doesn’t know what it opens. She doesn’t know where
the engraved numbers will lead her. All she knows is that her dad is not the
type to let her go hundreds of miles from home with no backup plan.
With her roommate in tow, Grace embarks on a treacherous
journey that may lead her home or may lead her right into the path of another
stranded traveler -- a disturbed gamer who sees nothing but opportunity in a
world that now closely resembles that of his favorite video games.
Realms of Ghost and Magic by J S Malcom - 4 Stars ****
When the fae beckon, very few resist. Even fewer return.
As a veil witch, I’m used to taking out the supernatural
trash. Everything from poltergeists to vampires, you name it and I’ve dealt
with it. So opening a paranormal cleanup business just seemed to make sense. If
I’m already dealing with the pests, why not get paid?
But when I accidentally breach the faerie realm to encounter
a girl recently reported missing, start seeing the ghost of a witch whose
disappearance has never been solved, and discover a Book of Shadows that opens
only for me, I can't just go back to business as usual. Especially when I also
gain the interest of a sexy and mysterious mage. Timing is everything, and even
as my desire grows, a little voice inside keeps reminding me to step carefully.
I know all too well that, in the supernatural world, opening doors means facing
consequences. In this case, those consequences might just mean never being
heard from again.
White Flag of the Dead by Joseph Talluto - 3 Stars ***
Millions died when the Enillo Virus swept the earth.
Millions more were lost when the victims of the plague refused to stay dead,
instead rising to slaughter and feed on those left alive.
For survivors like
John Talon and his son Jake, they are faced with a choice: Do they submit to
the dead, raising the white flag of surrender? Or do they find the will to
fight, to try and hang on to the last shreds or humanity?
I hope you are reading something fantastic. Thanks for stopping by.
