It was hit or miss in my reading choices this past week. I either really enjoyed the book or really didn't care for it very much. But that is the great thing about reading - you never know what is going to come of it. :)
Here are the ones I enjoyed:
Dragon Bones by Jasmine Walt & Ines Johnson
4 Stars ****
Meet Nia Rivers: archaeologist, fashionista, and an ancient immortal with a serious memory problem.
For the last couple of centuries, Nia has been trying to fill in the blanks of her past by shedding light on history's darkest stories. Her motto: the ugliest stories are the ones that deserve to be told the most. But when a mysterious woman comes forth with a two-thousand year old relic from Nia's past, Nia isn't sure if the story connected to it is one she wants told to the world. Unfortunately, Nia has no choice but to uncover the truth--fast--before a greedy land developer buries the site forever.
The fact that he's also an immortal, with a millennia-old grudge against her, doesn't help. Neither do the dark assassins who have been stalking her for centuries, and who've suddenly decided to up their game to end her life. Letting her enemies have their way might be best for Nia, especially when the truth might expose a horrific crime from Nia's past. But all stories deserve to be told. Even the ugliest ones.
Even if they say you might be a mass murderer.
Chaos Theory by Rich Restucci - 4 Stars ****
The world has fallen to a relentless enemy beyond reason or mercy. With no remorse they rend the planet with tooth and nail.
One man stands against the scourge of death that consumes
all.
Teamed with a genius survivalist and a teenage girl, he must
flee the teeming dead, the evils of humans left unchecked, and those that would
seek to use him. His best weapon to stave off the horrors of this new world?
His wit.
Mutation by Nerys Wheatley - 4 Stars ****
Sometimes, the best person to fight the monsters is someone
who's been one.
When a violent mob invades cop Alex MacCallum's part of
town, it's just a typical night for him and the others living there. They
expect to be feared and despised - they’re survivors of the virus that turns
its victims into mindless flesh-eaters.
But the next day, when a new strain of the virus begins
turning the population into eaters faster than ever before, Alex has to join
forces with Micah, the leader of the mob, just to stay alive.
Can the two enemies survive the hordes of eaters, as well as
each other, long enough to find a way to stop this new outbreak?
The Academy: Thief by C.L. Stone - 4 Stars ****
Thinking she's been working under the radar, Kayli has no
idea The Academy has been watching and taking notice. Now a team that needs her
skill has offered her a way out of her predicament and it's her last chance:
work with them, or face jail time. Kayli resists at first, but slowly the boys
reveal they can be trusted. With Marc, the straight man, Raven, the bad-boy
Russian, Corey and Brandon the twins as different as night and day, and Axel
their stoic leader, there's a lot Kayli can learn from these Academy guys about
living on the edge of the law. If only she can stay on the good side instead of
the bad.
Especially when the job they offer her is more than any of
them bargained for. After it's done, the hunters have become the hunted and
their target is now after Kayli. The Academy boys do their best to keep her
hidden, but a thief like Kayli will never sit still for long.
Dead in the Water by Hailey Edwards - 3 Stars ***
Camille Ellis is the Earthen Conclave’s golden girl. Her
peculiar talent solves cases with a touch. She isn’t afraid of getting her
hands dirty, but every bright star casts a shadow, and her deepest scars lurk
just beneath the skin.
A routine consultation goes sideways when a victim’s brother
gets involved in the investigation. Riding the edge of grief, the warg will go
to any lengths to avenge his sister’s death. Even if it means ensuring Cam’s
cooperation at the jaws of his wolf.
When the killer strikes again, Cam is caught between a warg
and a hard place. To save the next victim, she must embrace her past. Even if
it means dragging her darkest secrets into the light of day.
Zomb-Pocalypse by Megan Berry - 3 Stars ***
In the wake of Camp Freedom being overrun, Jane, Silas, and
Ryan set out for Abby's cabin in the woods of Illinois. They don't know what
happened to the rest of their group, but Jane can't continue to function unless
she finds out.
Life on the road only gets harder as the undead claim more
and more of humanity. The roads are blocked with wrecked cars and carnage, and
they have to deal with new threats—threats that aren't just trying to eat them
anymore.
It's a lot for anyone to take on, but Jane is determined to
find out what’s happened to her friends– or die trying.
